A pianola is a mechanism that turns a regular piano into an automatic one. Powered by a bellows system, pneumatics and a punch tape, these instruments were extremely popular through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Sergei Rachmaninoff himself was a brand ambassador for Ampico, a company which specialized in producing player pianos. The composer wrote over thirty music pieces for punch tapes, including his famous Piano Concerto No. 2. In the concert lecture, the audience will learn a lot about the history and mechanism of pianolas, and will hear a concert piece by Rachmaninoff performed on the instrument.
